What is the Islamic New Year?

The Islamic New Year, or Hijri New Year, marks the first day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. The Hijri calendar is counted from the Hijrah โ€” the Prophetโ€™s ๏ทบ migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE โ€” and was established during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA).

Because the Islamic year is lunar and about 11 days shorter than the solar year, the Islamic New Year moves earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year. 1449 AH begins in June 2027; 1450 AH is expected to begin in late May 2028.

Muharram: a sacred month

Muharram is one of the four sacred months in which good deeds are multiplied and wrongdoing is graver. The Prophet ๏ทบ called it โ€œthe month of Allahโ€ and said the best fasting after Ramadan is fasting in Muharram (Muslim). There are no special rituals prescribed for 1 Muharram itself, but the start of the year is a natural moment to renew intentions and set goals for worship and learning.
