I'rab
إعراب(I'rāb)
The system of grammatical inflections in Arabic, specifically the changing of word endings (vowels) to indicate their syntactic role (Subject, Object, etc.).
Balagha
بلاغة(Balāghah)
The science of Arabic eloquence and rhetoric. It focuses on how language is used to achieve clarity, beauty, and emotional impact.
Tafsir
تفسير(Tafsīr)
The critical explanation or interpretation of a text, particularly the Quran.
Tajweed
تجويد(Tajwīd)
The science and rules of reciting the Quran correctly, focusing on the proper articulation of letters and the rules of elongation and pausing.
Ayah
آية(Āyah)
Commonly translated as 'verse', it literally means a 'sign' or 'miracle' from Allah. It is a unit of the Quranic text.
Surah
سورة(Sūrah)
A chapter of the Quran. There are 114 Surahs in the Quran.
Makharij
مخارج(Makhārij)
The points of articulation in the throat, tongue, and mouth where Arabic letters are produced.
Ghunnah
غنة(Ghunnah)
A nasal sound produced from the nose, specific to the letters Noon (ن) and Meem (م) under certain conditions.
