When Is Laylat al-Qadr 2025?
Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Power / Night of Decree) occurs in the last 10 days of Ramadan, specifically on the odd nights: 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th. In 2025, these nights (which begin after Maghrib the evening before) fall as follows:
| Odd Night | Night Begins (Evening) | Day |
|---|---|---|
| 21st Ramadan | Thursday, 20 March 2025 | Friday, 21 March 2025 |

| 25th Ramadan | Monday, 24 March 2025 | Tuesday, 25 March 2025 |
| 27th Ramadan (Most likely) | Wednesday, 26 March 2025 | Thursday, 27 March 2025 |
| 29th Ramadan | Friday, 28 March 2025 | Saturday, 29 March 2025 |
What Is Laylat al-Qadr?
Laylat al-Qadr is the holiest night in Islam. It is the night on which Allah ﷻ first revealed the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, through the Angel Jibril (Gabriel). The Quran devotes an entire Surah to this night:
"Indeed, We sent it [the Quran] down on the Night of Power. And what will make you realise what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend in it by the permission of their Lord for every affair. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn." (Surah Al-Qadr, 97:1-5)
The Virtue of Laylat al-Qadr
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever prays on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and hoping for reward, his previous sins will be forgiven." (Bukhari & Muslim)
Worshipping on this single night is worth more than 83 years and 4 months of continuous worship. This is one of Allah's greatest gifts to the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ — previous nations had longer lifespans, but through Laylat al-Qadr, we can match their worship.
How to Identify Laylat al-Qadr
The exact night is deliberately hidden so that Muslims strive in worship throughout the last 10 days. Some narrations describe the following signs of Laylat al-Qadr:
- The night is calm, still, and pleasant — neither too hot nor too cold
- The moon appears clear and bright (like a piece of plate)
- The next morning's sun rises without rays — reddish and mild
However, these are descriptions, not definitive tests, and the night cannot be confirmed in advance.
Best Acts of Worship on Laylat al-Qadr
1. The Special Dua
Aisha (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ: "If I know which night is Laylat al-Qadr, what should I say?" He replied: "Say: Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'anni."
Translation: "O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning, You love to pardon, so grant me pardon." (Tirmidhi — Sahih)
2. Long Night Prayers (Qiyam al-Layl)
Pray as many Rak'ahs as you can — either Tarawih in congregation or private Tahajjud at home. Recite long Surahs slowly and with reflection. Quality of focus (Khushu') matters more than quantity.
3. Recitation of Quran
Read or listen to as much Quran as possible throughout the night. Even if you cannot read Arabic, listening to a reciter while following the translation is deeply rewarding.
4. Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness)
Repeat: Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from Allah) continuously throughout the night, especially in Sujood.
5. Sadaqah (Charity)
Give charity on each of the last 10 nights. Even a small amount given on Laylat al-Qadr is worth 83+ years of donated charity. Many Muslims set up recurring donations for the last 10 nights to ensure they capture it.
6. I'tikaf (Seclusion in the Mosque)
The Prophet ﷺ performed I'tikaf — seclusion in the mosque devoted entirely to worship — every Ramadan, especially intensifying it in the last 10 days. If possible, spend even 1–2 nights in I'tikaf at your local mosque.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 27th night definitely Laylat al-Qadr?
Ubayy ibn Ka'b (RA) was certain it was the 27th, based on a sign the Prophet ﷺ described. Many scholars lean towards the 27th as most likely, especially in odd years of Ramadan. However, the Prophet ﷺ told us to seek it in all odd nights of the last 10 days, so strive throughout.
Can women in their period worship on Laylat al-Qadr?
Yes. Women in their menstrual cycle can and should engage in worship on these nights through: Dhikr, Dua, listening to Quran, Istighfar, Sadaqah, and attending Islamic gatherings. They are not excluded from the blessing of this night.
