12: 69 to 12: 72

[I Seek refuge in ALLAH from Shaitan - the accursed one]

Wa Lammā Dakhalū `Alá Yūsufa 'Āwá 'Ilayhi 'Akhāhu Qāla 'Innī 'Anā 'Akhūka Falā Tabta'is Bimā Kānū Ya`malūna
Now when they came into Joseph's presence, he received his (full) brother to stay with him. He said (to him): "Behold! I am thy (own) brother; so grieve not at aught of their doings."

[12 : 69]

Allah states that when Yusuf's brothers went in before him along with his full brother Binyamin, he invited them to a place of honor as privileged guests. He granted them gifts and generous hospitality and kindness. He met his brother in confidence and told him the story of what happened to him and that he was in fact his brother.
He said to him,`(grieve not) nor feel sad for what they did to me.'
He ordered Binyamin to hide the news from them and to refrain from telling them that the `Aziz is his brother Yusuf. He planned with him to keep him in Egypt enjoying honor and great hospitality.

Falammā Jahhazahum Bijahāzihim Ja`ala As-Siqāyata Fī Raĥli 'Akhīhi Thumma 'Adhdhana Mu'uadhdhinun 'Ayyatuhā Al-`Īru 'Innakum Lasāriqūna
At length when he had furnished them forth with provisions (suitable) for them, he put the drinking cup into his brother's saddle-bag. Then shouted out a crier: "O ye (in) the caravan! behold! ye are thieves, without doubt!"

[12 : 70]

After Yusuf supplied them with their provisions, he ordered some of his servants to place his silver bowl (in Binyamin's bag). according to the majority of scholars.

Some scholars said that the king's bowl was made of gold.

Ibn Zayd added that the king used it to drink from, and later, measured food grains with it since food became scarce in that time, according to Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid, Qatadah, Ad-Dahhak and `Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd.

Shu`bah said that Abu Bishr narrated that Sa`id bin Jubayr said that Ibn `Abbas said that the king's bowl was made of silver and he used it to drink with.

Yusuf had the bowl placed in Binyamin's bag while they were unaware, and then had someone herald,
O you (in) the caravan! Surely, you are thieves!)

Qālū Wa 'Aqbalū `Alayhim Mādhā Tafqidūna
They said, turning towards them: "What is it that ye miss?"

[12 : 71]

They looked at the man who was heralding this statement and asked him, "What is it that you have lost"?

Qālū Nafqidu Şuwā`a Al-Maliki Wa Liman Jā'a Bihi Ĥimlu Ba`īrin Wa 'Anā Bihi Za`īmun
They said: "We miss the great beaker of the king; for him who produces it, is (the reward of) a camel load; I will be bound by it."

[12 : 72]

They said: "We have lost the bowl of the king...''), which he used to measure food grains,
(and for him who produces it is a camel load), as a reward,
(and I will be bound by it.), as assurance of delivery of the reward.

  • Yusuf met his brother Binyamin after many many years!
  • On the meeting he told him about what he passed through and consoled him at the same time, not to grieve for what had passed and be happy for being together again.
  • A lie which benefits the people involved (for good) or does justice to someone, is allowed to be told. Hence, Yusuf and Binyamin plan together to lie about the theft of the bowl.

Whatever good comes from this post is from Allah alone and any mistakes therein are mine - if found, please inform, ASAP, Insha Allah.
